How a hemostatic gelatin sponge works
Placed in the wound, the sponge soaks up blood and forms a porous matrix on which a clot develops. This helps stop minor venous or capillary bleeding where suturing or pressure is insufficient or difficult to apply, e.g. in tooth sockets. The sponge is resorbable, so it does not need to be removed.
