The Bioclear Method – anatomic matrices and injection-molded composite

Clear anatomic Bioclear matrices and the heated-composite injection technique allow direct closure of black triangles and diastemas and restoration of anterior and posterior teeth. IMMT helps clinics get to know the method, order supplies through authorized distribution and choose the right training.

Bioclear products are not sold in the IMMT online store – we help you order them through authorized distribution.

What is the Bioclear Method?

Bioclear was founded in 2007 in Tacoma (Washington, USA) by dentist Dr. David Clark, who worked for many years under high magnification (microscope) and founded the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry. The manufacturer describes the Bioclear Method as a combination of updated tooth preparation, injection molding of heated composite and patented clear, anatomically shaped matrices.

The principle is simple: a clear anatomic matrix is fixed to the tooth, heated flowable and paste composite is injected into it, and the restoration is cured through the matrix. The composite is shaped “around the tooth” rather than only in the cavity, which allows control of the contact and the emergence profile, while the Mylar surface leaves a smooth interproximal composite.

Why dentists choose Bioclear

  • 01

    Anatomic matrix shape

The matrices have the tooth contour and emergence profile, so composite can be injected interproximally without leaving overhangs at the margin. Once seated in the sulcus, the matrix stabilizes itself.

  • 02

    Monolithic restoration

Heated composite is injected in a single flow through the clear matrix, producing a monolithic restoration without manual layering interfaces. The HeatSync warmer (approx. 68 °C) is used to heat the composite.

  • 03

    Minimally invasive approach

The method focuses on direct, additive treatment – often as an alternative to crowns or ceramic veneers, preserving more healthy tooth structure.

  • 04

    Systematic matrix selection

Color-coded matrices and gauges (Black Triangle Gauge, Evolve Matrix Height Indicator) help select the right curvature or height straight away and shorten selection time.

  • 05

    Clean surface before bonding

A two-tone disclosing solution reveals biofilm, and the Blaster device with aluminum trihydroxide powder removes it without damaging the enamel surface (according to the manufacturer).

  • 06

    Structured training

Bioclear Learning Center courses are held in small groups, with hands-on work on soft-tissue models and instructor feedback; some courses use a microscope.

Clinical cases treated with Bioclear

Black triangles

Open gingival embrasures (so-called black triangles) are closed with Black Triangle matrices – canine to canine, in both arches. Courses also teach combining this with covering root abrasions (Class V).

Diastema closure

DC series (Diastema Closure) matrices have a larger emergence profile and are designed for closing larger gaps; A series matrices are used for smaller gaps.

Class III and IV restorations

From small to large carious lesions on anterior teeth (Class III), fractured incisors and incisal edge restoration. TSS and HD Anterior matrices are designed for this.

Composite veneers and direct crowns

TSS kit indications include composite veneers, direct composite crowns, circumferential demineralization and mottled enamel; the 360° Veneer matrix is designed for a full-tooth composite shell.

Peg laterals and canine shape correction

Black Triangle and anterior matrices are used to restore the shape of peg-lateral teeth; courses also cover visual correction of rotated teeth with composite (“instant ortho”).

Class II (posterior) restorations

Evolve matrices, the TwinRing Universal separator and Diamond Wedge wedges are designed for tight, broad contacts; for Class I and II cavities – the Calla-Lily Fissurotomy preparation technique.

Pediatric dentistry

A dedicated SS White / Bioclear pediatric preparation kit and a two-day course for pediatric dentists – for restorations of primary and permanent teeth.

What the Bioclear workflow looks like

Simplified overview based on the manufacturer's descriptions; the exact protocol depends on the case and is taught in courses.

  1. 1

    Assessment and biofilm disclosure

A two-tone disclosing solution stains fresh biofilm pink and older (over 24 h) biofilm and cracks purple.

  2. 2

    Biofilm removal

The Blaster device with aluminum trihydroxide powder cleans biofilm from the surfaces to be restored.

  3. 3

    Contact and tooth preparation

TruContact 2.0 serrated saws and abrasive strips open the natural contact so that a Mylar matrix fits between the teeth; for posterior teeth – Calla-Lily preparation.

  4. 4

    Matrix selection and placement

The matrix is selected with a gauge or height indicator, seated in the sulcus and, if needed, stabilized with a Diamond Wedge and TwinRing.

  5. 5

    Injection of heated composite

Flowable and paste composite heated in the HeatSync warmer is injected into the matrix and cured.

  6. 6

    Finishing and polishing

After the matrix is removed, the restoration is finished and polished with the two-step Rockstar Polish system.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy Bioclear products in the IMMT online store?

No. IMMT is the official representative of Bioclear, but does not sell Bioclear products in its online store. Contact us – we will help you choose a kit and order it through authorized distribution.

Can a dentist who has not completed a course use Bioclear matrices?

Yes. According to the manufacturer, any dentist can use Bioclear products and procedures. Still, we recommend at least the introductory course, as the method involves specific steps. “Certified Provider” status is granted only after completing a Learning Center course.

Which composite should I use?

The Bioclear Method relies on heated flowable and paste composite injected into the matrix. The manufacturer does not specify a single mandatory brand – its training videos use composites from various manufacturers. We recommend discussing the specific choice during a consultation.

What is the difference between HD and Original anterior matrices?

Thickness and stiffness: HD matrices are 75 µm thick (stiffer), Original – 50 µm (more flexible). Both systems include an A series (for smaller gaps) and a DC series (for diastemas).

How do I choose a Black Triangle matrix?

The BT gauge is inserted into the black triangle, and its color indicates the required curvature. The matrices come in 2 sizes and 4 curvatures: blue closes gaps up to 2.5 mm, green – up to 2 mm, yellow – up to 1.5 mm, pink – up to 1 mm.

What is the HeatSync warmer for?

Injection molding is performed with heated composite. HeatSync heats it to approx. 68 °C and maintains this temperature; it holds composite guns, syringes and additional compules. The manufacturer considers it one of the key tools of the method.

Is the Blaster compatible with my dental unit?

The Blaster connects via a KaVo Multiflex-type coupling (4-hole, without fiber optics). Before ordering, we recommend checking your unit's compatibility and compressor pressure requirements with IMMT.

Where can I learn the Bioclear Method?

The Bioclear Learning Center offers a one-day online introduction and hands-on courses in the USA and other countries (e.g. the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, Spain). IMMT will help you choose the right course and keep you informed about training in the region.
